In Islamic theory, the family is the basic unit in building Muslim society. It is the nurturing environment of proper spiritual and moral upbringing, the vital environment through which religious values are inherited. It acts as the link between the individual and the society.

The family serves as a protective shield for its members from exploitation and tyranny, through solidarity, guardianship, and the authority of the head of the household. As Imam Ali, (peace be upon him) said: "The child has a right over the father, and the father has a right over the child. The father right over the child is that the child obeys him in everything, except in disobedience to Allah. The child right over the father is that the father gives him a good name, teaches him good manners, and teaches him the Quran." The Holy Qur’an even counts the family and the bonds of affection and mercy within it among its verses that should be contemplated and pondered. Allah, Almighty says: {And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves spouses that you may find rest in them, and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed, in that are signs for a people who give thought}.
